Nigella species
Nigella is a fantastic, easy-to-grow annual that looks great with its lacy, jewel-coloured flowers followed by puffy, crown-like seed pods. It also self-seeds freely around the garden and provides plenty of seeds for seed-eating birds.
Good for: This annual is so quick to flower and then set seed that it provides seedpods jampacked with seeds for smaller birds to enjoy all summer long.
Garden merit: There are few places in the garden that wonât look even better for a handful of Nigella adding a splash of dainty colour. Nigella damascena is the best form for flowers, especially the clear blue Nigella damascena âMiss Jekyllâ or the pink, white and blue Nigella damascena âPersian Jewelsâ. Nigella sativa is far less showy but still great for birds â and for us too, as it is better known as Kalonji or Black Cumin.
